NMFT vol 5 update

Unfortunately, 赤い公園 can no longer come to Canada in October.
Akai Koen was the main band I wanted to bring back for the next tour and their absence throws a huge monkey wrench into the program.
I found out the news 2 weeks ago and have been looking for an adequate replacement.
There are a number of bands that would be happy to play but in the end I have to be satisfied with the final line-up.
Each tour I lose an average of $35,000, so I’m not in a big rush to throw away that kind of money on a tour with a line-up I’m only lukewarm about.
Right now I’m waiting on きのこ帝国 (kinoko teikoku).
Unfortunately, the Oct 15-25 schedule conflicts with gigs they’re already committed to.
We’re trying to work on an alternate schedule but that might screw things up for the other bands (primarily Mariko Goto).
Things aren’t looking too good and the smart thing may be to just cancel October and concentrate on making a tour in May 2013 the best NMFT yet.
NMFT5 in October hasn’t been cancelled yet but most likely I may have to.

Why kinoko teikoku?
Next to Akai Koen I’d say they’re the most promising young band I’ve come across in the last two years.
Their music is undeniably shoegaze but kinoko teikoku’s music is so much more powerful than 99.9% of shoegaze bands.
For one, vocalist Sato has a hauntingly beautiful voice that sends shivers down your spine. Most shoegaze bands have (often intentionally) uninspired, aloof, forgettable vocals.
Despite their young age kinoko teikoku have an incredibly earnest and mature sound… BUT they also have the capacity to rock out with ear-piercingly loud, powerful instrumental ‘freak-outs’ that will have you grinning from ear-to-ear. The perfect combination of beauty, grace and raw power.
If they can’t come this year, I’l likely bring them next year and if you like good music you’ll be glad I did.

@ Vish: Thanks for introducing me to their music 2 years ago. It was worth it sneaking out of Kyushu Pop to see them at Ninespices. It left with me a great first impression and I’ve seen them two more times since then (one of those times was with you when we rushed to Koenji to watch Praha Depart after kinoko teikoku in Shibuya.) Gt/vocalist Sato also performs solo under the moniker クガツハズカム (kugatsu has come = September has come). She’s actually performing at Fuji Rock on 7/28.
Is there any chance we will ever see Qomolangma Tomato as part of one of these tours?
I know Akai Ko-En were the ones insisting on you bringing Chi-na along as well… Does this mean you’re going to find another band to replace Chi-na too, or are they still in the possible line-up?

(ふくろうず)? they would be an awesome addition to a future NMFT lineup!
@Alexis: I can’t do that to Chi-na especially after they named their new CD Granville with a song on the album called Granville Island. And after watching them last night I would be stupid not to bring them because they’re better than ever. Playing with more confidence, more power and some great new songs.
@Matt: I used to love ふくろうず back when they were a small indie band. ふくろうず used to be part of a great community of bands that often played at Shinjuku Motion eg: Owarikara, SuiseiNoboAz, 太平洋不知火楽団, FAR FRANCE, mothercoat, シャムキャッツ, JUGONZ, Sebastian X. I used to have videos of them up on Youtube from when I saw they 4 years ago but the band asked to take the videos down. That ticked me off a little but then I realized it was nice of them to ask me to take them down instead of going straight to Youtube and having my account penalized.
The first time I saw them was @ Swan Song Council 2008.
That was an important show since at the time I still listened to a lot of more mainstream artists like ミドリ, 凛として時雨 and Chatmonchy.
I had gone to each day of Countdown Japan in 2008 to watch ミドリ, Chatmonchy, the band apart, Perfume etc but then I got tired of the whole commercial atmosphere of the festival and massive crowds. Chatmonchy used to be one of my all-time favorite bands and they were set to play at night on New Year’s eve. But I actually left CDJ early and headed over to Swan Song Council instead with a hunch that I would enjoy myself alot more at a music festival that was more down to earth and where the bands and audience mixed together as friends/peers.
I was right. I had so much fun at Swan Song Council and ふくろうず put on a great show. Toki of mothercoat was spazzing out in seizures watching their performance! hahaha. Actually, it was mothercoat’s performance at SSC 2008 that blew me away and made me bring them on the very first NMFT tour. Although back then they were a 3-piece and the best part of the band was ex-drummer Hajime who quit before coming on the NMFT tour.
Scool Food Punishment played at SSC 2008 before signing to a major and the Telephones played as special guests as well. Matsuzaki Nao also kicked ass at SSC 2008. SSC 2008 helped switch my focus towards going to shows with lesser known/underground bands.
ふくろうず used to have a great raw, underground pop sound but they’ve polished their act (too much for my tastes) on signing with Sony.
Mari (singer) used to go to all the shows her friends’ bands played at and was an awesome sh*t disturber when she got drunk. She’d bumrush the stage and dive/crowd surf and heckle the bands (esp if JUGONZ were on). You would never know she could be like that based on her timid demeanor on stage with ふくろうず.
Right now there are some other great “underground pop” bands like thai kick murph and ハラフロムヘル that I am more focussed on potentially bringing to Canada.
