The hatch is an experimental post-hardcore band from Sapporo, Hokkaido. Originally their music was a quirky brand of ultra-fast hardcore and thrash fused with jazz, a bit of funk and distinguished by a ‘mean’ trombone. Recently they’ve slowed down and matured their sound to give a much darker, heavier and technical presence. If their earlier material compares to early YOLZ IN THE SKY then their newer sound is closer to downy meets Death Grips.

In the past the hatch’s shows were characterized by unbridled chaos, energy and fun:

As of 2019, their performances are now much more sophisticated, dark and almost cooler-than-thou…. but-in-the-best-possible-way:

I wish I had a time machine so I could also invite the hatch (pre-2018) to Canada. They would have been a blast to watch live at Soybomb. Although the new version of the hatch isn’t as crazy on stage they still play a lot of their older songs and their new songs really show their chops as musicians. Despite being a completely underground band the hatch performed at a number of prestigious music festivals in 2019 including Rising Sun, Ringo Fes and Synchronicity. So even though the adrenaline-overdrive wacky hijinks are a thing of the past, the hatch now sound better than ever and are a hot commodity as one of the coolest bands on the planet.
